Mazda MX-5 Miata
Few cars are as fun to drive at an affordable price as the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and it's the only convertible sports car available. It's also on our 2022 Editors' Choice list. The bouncy four-cylinder engine is mostly mated to a satisfying six-speed manual transmission, but an automatic transmission is also offered. The Miata's handling is punchy and playful, making hitting winding roads a joy. Most versions come with a manually folding soft top, but there is also a more expensive RF model with a Targa electric hardtop. With either roof, the Miata's interior is cozy yet well-equipped, with infotainment features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard on all trims.
Subaru BRZ
By prioritizing affordability and easy maneuverability over high power and exclusivity at a high price, the 2022 Subaru BRZ continues to be the pure sports car for everyone. The completely redesigned rear-wheel drive coupe remains unique in Subaru's all-wheel drive lineup. So does its mechanical twin, the Toyota 86. With a 228-horsepower naturally aspirated boxer engine, the BRZ is more powerful than ever, which at least partly addresses one of our biggest complaints. Combined with a lower center of gravity as well as a light curb weight, this assertive 2+2 hatchback is designed to deliver the "sitting in your pants" feeling of all great sports cars. With a new interior design that combines modern technology but retains the practicality of its predecessor, the 2022 BRZ beats out affordable sports car favorites like the Mazda MX-5 Miata to win top 10 awards and a spot on our Editors' Choice list.
Toyota GR86
Toyota GR86
The second generation Toyota GR86 follows the same rear wheel drive formula as the first generation car. Co-developed with the Subaru BRZ, the 2022 GR86 will feature a boxer four-cylinder engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. This time, Toyota has addressed our main complaint about the latest generation and has increased the power of the GR86 for 2022. The new model is powered by a 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower, up 23 hp. more. than the 2.0 liter grinder of the previous model. The result is a phenomenal driving experience for the price, a combination worthy of places on our Top 10 and Editors' Choice lists.
Toyota Supra
It's been a few years since the Supra returned to Toyota's lineup after a long hiatus, but despite our growing familiarity, the 2022 Supra remains one of our favorite sports cars. In fact, it's on our 2022 Editors' Choice list. Although designed and built alongside the BMW Z4 Convertible, the Supra Coupe offers a personality unique from its Bavarian sibling despite the two machines sharing the same powertrains. The latter include two turbocharged engines, a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 255 hp. and an optional 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 382 hp. Both feed the rear wheels through a fast eight-speed automatic transmission. The Toyota's cabin is cozy and surprisingly premium, mostly because it's taken from a BMW parts bin. The 2022 Supra also comes with a host of infotainment and safety features.
Chevy Camaro
The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro coupe and convertible is pure and simple driving joy. Forget about their poor visibility and cramped rear seats. Instead, enjoy their agile handling, satisfying manual shift transmission, and surprisingly smooth ride. Turbo four with a capacity of 275 hp is the default engine, but choosing a 335-hp V-6 or 455-hp V-8 unlocks more melodic soundtracks and more powerful acceleration. Its cabin uses unappealing materials and some would call it claustrophobic, but its front seats are comfortable and supportive and the well-equipped infotainment system is easy to use. The Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger are better for everyday commuting, but with the optional 1LE package, the Chevy pony car turns into the best race car of the three. When it comes to performance for the price, it's hard to find better value for money than the 2022 Camaro.
